How to Renew Your Spanish National Identity Card (DNI)

Renewing your Spanish National Identity Card (Documento Nacional de Identidad or DNI) requires booking an appointment and visiting an authorized Spanish National Police station in person. Whether your DNI is approaching its expiration date, has already expired, or has been lost or stolen, you can begin the renewal process by arranging an appointment through the official Spanish National Police Appointment Portal.

You can renew your DNI up to 180 days (six months) before its expiration date. If your card has already expired, or you need a replacement because it has been lost or stolen, you can also apply for a new one. Make sure you prepare the required documents before attending your appointment to help the process go smoothly.

How to Book an Appointment for Spanish DNI Renewal

To renew your Spanish DNI, schedule an appointment through the official Spanish National Police appointment system or visit an authorized DNI issuance office for guidance. You must attend the appointment in person so that the relevant authorities can verify your identity and process your application.

Before your appointment, gather your current DNI, a recent passport-style photograph, and any additional documents required for your circumstances. If your address has changed or your previous card has been lost or stolen, additional information may be necessary.

Documents Required to Renew a Spanish DNI

Applicants should prepare the necessary documentation before visiting the police station. The documents generally required for a Spanish DNI renewal include:

  • Current DNI: Bring your existing identity card, even if it has expired.
  • Recent color photograph: Provide one recent photograph measuring 32 x 26 mm, with a plain white background.
  • Proof of address: If you have changed your address, you may need a recent municipal registration certificate (certificado de empadronamiento). The police office may verify your registration electronically.
  • Police report: If your DNI has been lost or stolen, bring a police report (denuncia), where applicable.

Spanish DNI Renewal Fee and Processing Time

The standard Spanish DNI renewal fee is approximately €12, although the applicable fee and any exemptions should be confirmed through official government sources. Payment methods may include cash or card, depending on the issuing office.

In the usual renewal process, your new DNI 4.0 is printed and issued during your appointment. Its electronic identity certificates (DNIe) are also provided as part of the card's electronic functionality. After receiving your new card, you can use an authorized update-point terminal to update your PIN and manage your electronic certificates.

Important Information About Spanish DNI and Foreigner Residency Cards

The Spanish DNI is the national identity document issued to Spanish citizens. Foreign nationals residing in Spain generally use a different document, such as the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE), depending on their immigration status.

If you are a foreign national renewing a TIE rather than a Spanish DNI, the procedure is different. You may need to complete Form EX-17, pay the applicable fee using Modelo 790, Code 012, and attend the relevant appointment at an authorized immigration or police office.

Always verify the current requirements, appointment availability, fees, and payment methods through the official Spanish National Police or government website before attending your appointment.
